The leaders of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council, Dorset Council, Somerset Council and Wiltshire Council have applauded the Prime Minister’s confirmation during PMQs yesterday, 21 October, that the Government supports the establishment of a Mayoral Strategic Authority for Wessex.
The announcement marks a major milestone in the region’s long-standing campaign to secure devolution and unlock greater powers, investment and decision-making closer to local communities.
The response followed a question from Edward Morello, MP for West Dorset, during PMQs this afternoon. He asked whether the Prime Minister would commit to a Mayor for Wessex by 2028, saying: “A Wessex Mayor could unlock £460 million in additional annual funding and generate £16 billion in additional economic output over 30 years.”
In a joint statement, Councillor Millie Earl, Leader of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council, Councillor Nick Ireland, Leader of Dorset Council, Councillor Bill Revans, Leader of Somerset Council, and Councillor Ian Thorn, Leader of Wiltshire Council, said:
“Today is a landmark moment for Wessex and a powerful vote of confidence in our region.
“The Prime Minister's support today is recognition of the hard work that has gone into making the case for Wessex and the enormous potential of our region.
“This is about delivering better outcomes for our residents and businesses. Securing a Mayoral Strategic Authority will ensure that Wessex is no longer left behind but will finally be on a level playing field for the funding, powers and opportunities available to other parts of the country.
“This means greater local control over investment in transport, housing, skills, infrastructure, economic growth and jobs. It means decisions being made closer to the communities they affect. And it means giving our residents and businesses the tools they need to thrive.
“Wessex is ready. We've done the groundwork. We have built a strong partnership, established shared priorities and shown that we can deliver at scale.
"There is still work to do, but we start from a position of strength. Our message to Government is - we're ready, we're excited, and we're looking forward to getting on with the job."
Devolution is not Local Government Reorganisation (LGR). The Wessex Partnership comprises four unitary councils that have already undergone LGR. Devolution is the handing down of central government powers and funding to the regions, not further reorganisation.
The four councils will now work with the Government to agree the next steps and put Wessex in the strongest possible position to secure devolved powers and investment.
