Wiltshire Council is set to begin work later this month on a new pedestrian improvement scheme in Enford that will make it safer and easier for people to access local bus services and travel on foot.
The scheme will see a new stretch of footway added on the A345, just south of the junction to New Buildings. Bus stop kerbs will be installed to help users to get on and off the bus at the existing bus stop location, and dropped kerbs will be installed opposite the layby and path leading into the village.
Construction is scheduled to start on 25 August and is expected to take around three weeks to complete.
The scheme has been developed following requests from Enford Parish Council through the Stonehenge Local Highways and Footway Improvement Group (LHFIG) and is designed to improve accessibility and safety for pedestrians in the area.
To enable the work to be completed safely, three-way temporary traffic signals will be in operation throughout the construction period.
Cllr Martin Smith, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “We’re pleased to be delivering these improvements in Enford, which will make a real difference to residents and visitors who walk through the area or use local bus services.
“This project has come about thanks to local feedback and partnership working with Enford Parish Council through the LHFIG. While the work may cause some temporary inconvenience, the long-term benefits will help create safer, more accessible journeys for everyone. We would like to thank people for their patience while these worthwhile improvements are carried out.
“Small schemes like this show the real benefit of the LHFIG process, because it allows local people to suggest small improvements that make a big difference in their communities.”
The existing bus stop within the works area will not be accessible while construction is taking place, because due to the lack of footways along this section of road, it has not been possible to identify a safe temporary alternative bus stop location.
