Salisbury Soroptimists are celebrating another successful bra collection in Salisbury and surrounding areas.
“We are happy to announce that 5200 gently used bras and dozens of brand-new knickers are on their way to Ghana to be distributed to women who otherwise would not be able to afford them,” said Soroptimist President Liz Batten. “Donations came in from all directions, and we are particularly thankful to the many locations that hosted our pink collection baskets.”
Baskets for donations were hosted by the Five Rivers Leisure Centre, Salisbury Library, Fisherton Mill Café, the Methodist Church, Salisbury and South Wilts Golf Club, Salisbury Playhouse, Salisbury Hospital Fitness Centre, Quaker Meeting House and Here Self Storage.
Others gave their donations to family and friends, and others even posted them in! Another bagful came via the Hospice Shop.
A happy evening of sorting and counting at the Baptist Church Hall prepared sacks, each containing 100 bras, ready for loading onto the transport lorry.
The lorry was kindly provided by Henry John Reid of Bitsandpieces, who only charged for his fuel. Henry John and his partner are more usually involved in house clearances, but were happy to help with this charity project.
The bras are stored in Twickenham by Zabra: Afreebra Initiative, before being flown to Ghana by the Rural Smile Foundation.
During the evening, as the bras were emptied onto the counting table, a large bunch of keys fell out!! There were two car keys, front-door keys, a fob, and Tesco Clubcard tags. Happily, the keys were returned to their owner after a social media post.
