Two teenagers from Fordingbridge have been sentenced to four years in custody following a revised judgement at the Court of Appeal today (2nd July).
Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr, the most senior judge in England and Wales, spent yesterday hearing that the original sentences received by three boys at Southampton Crown Court in May were 'wrong'.
The original sentences handed down to the three boys by Judge Nicholas Rowland had been non-custodial, with Judge Rowland saying that he wanted to "avoid criminalising these children unnecessarily".
The sentencing of the three boys led to a public outcry and were referred to the Court of Appeal by the Lord Hermer, the Attorney General, saying that they were 'unduly lenient' with the two-day hearing beginning yesterday.
The two older boys were originally given three-year Youth Rehabilitation Orders (YROs) and have now been sentenced to four years in custody. Carr said time spent on curfew will count toward the sentence. The two were known as X and Y during the trial, whilst the victims were C1 and C2.
The pair will have to follow police instructions for the rest of their lives. Restraining orders prohibiting contact with the victims have also been put in place; C1 and C2 will remain in place for the duration of the offenders' lives.
A Third offender, known as Z during the trial, was reminded that his actions were "also very bad" and that his sentence would not be changed. Z, 13 at the time of the second attack, was given an 18-month YRO and a 10-year restraining order. He's also subject to a nighttime curfew without electronic monitoring.
