Opening on Tuesday 8 September 2026 for bookings from Monday 14 September, Wiltshire Council is introducing a trial booking system at six Household Recycling Centres (HRCs). It will apply to the following HRCs: Devizes, Lower Compton, Melksham, Purton, Salisbury and Stanton St Quintin.
Wiltshire Council has faced operational challenges due to increasing demand at HRCs, the trial aims to improve the service provided to customers and the operation of the sites. This should improve safety, reduce queues and make visits more efficient.
Bookings can be made online, and through phoning the Customer Services team. Residents will be able to book visits up to seven days in advance, including same-day bookings subject to availability.
The system is anticipated to help prevent business waste being disposed of at sites and avoid the unnecessary costs of managing waste that businesses should pay to dispose of. HRCs are provided for residents to dispose of their household waste. While a booking system will not stop all misuse, it will help us spot unusual use of the service more easily than the current system.
Wiltshire Council also assures residents that the introduction of the HRC booking system will not increase fly tipping. They will continue to monitor fly tipping throughout this trial period, but note that research by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) found no direct link between booking systems at recycling centres and increased levels of fly-tipping.
Before any decisions are made about the future of the booking system, Wiltshire Council will take into count both the outcome of the trial and feedback from residents about the impact of the system.
