Take the hassle out of council tax: switch to e‑billing

Following the issuing of the council tax bills for 2026/27, Wiltshire Council is encouraging residents to sign up for council tax e‑billing so they can receive future bills digitally. 

Switching to council tax e‑billing is a simple way for residents to take the hassle out of managing their bill, with instant access, greater flexibility, and less paper to keep track of. 

By choosing to receive bills digitally, residents can: 

• Get notified straight away when their bill is ready, without waiting for it to arrive by post 

• Access their bill whenever it’s needed, on any device, whether at home or on the go 

• Stay on top of payments more easily, with clear information and optional reminders for those not paying by direct debit 

• Cut down on paper, helping reduce waste and carbon emissions 

• Avoid delays or lost post, with bills stored securely online 

Signing up now means residents will be set up to manage their council tax digitally in future, making things quicker and more convenient year after year. 

Alongside e‑billing, the council tax online portal also allows residents to take care of a range of everyday tasks in one place, including: 

• Printing their council tax bill 

• Setting up or changing a direct debit 

• Reporting a change of address 

• Checking their council tax band 

• Applying for discounts 

When making a council tax payment, residents should check that the reference number they use matches the reference number shown on their most recent council tax bill. The reference number can be found on the front of the bill and using the latest reference number will help ensure payments are allocated correctly and avoid any unnecessary delays in updating their account. 

Cllr Mel Jacob, Cabinet Member for Communities, Engagement and Corporate Services, said: “We were pleased to the response to our campaign earlier in the year and following the issue of this year’s council tax bills, it is a really good time for residents to consider switching to e‑billing if they haven’t already. It’s a quick and straightforward change that makes managing council tax simpler, more secure and more convenient all year round. 

“E‑billing gives people instant access to their bill whenever they need it and removes the need to worry about paperwork or waiting for the post. At the same time, it helps reduce printing and postage costs and cuts down on paper waste, which is better for the environment and for council finances. 

“Thousands of Wiltshire residents already benefit from receiving their bills digitally, and we’d encourage anyone who can to do the same and enjoy a faster, greener and more flexible way of managing their council tax. So, my message is simple – make the switch.”  

People wishing to switch to e‑billing can register at www.wiltshire.gov.uk/council-tax-online, and this means that any future council tax correspondence will immediately revert to being issued digitally.
