Popular Organ Prom returns to Salisbury Cathedral

Salisbury Cathedral’s renowned Organ Prom is back this August, which promises to be an enjoyable summer’s evening of popular music.

The fun and relaxed evening of organ music will take place on Saturday 8 August, where the audience is encouraged to wander around the building, enjoying a drink while listening to a mix of music, from organ classics to film music and popular songs – voted for by the public.

Sponsored by Batt Broadbent Solicitors, the Organ Prom is a brilliant opportunity to hear unconventional music played on the mighty Father Willis organ, filling the Cathedral, with a big screen livestreaming from the organ loft, so audiences will be able to watch the expert musicians at work.

In keeping with Salisbury Cathedral’s yearlong theme of Joyful Noise, popular classics will include Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer, Bach’s Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring and Prince of Denmark’s March by Clarke, adding to the lively programme.

Other classical hits will include the mighty Jupiter from Holst’s The Planets, Nimrod from Elgar’s Enigma Variations and the joyful Hallelujah Chorus, as well as Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee and Walton’s Crown Imperial.

The organists will be David Halls, the Cathedral’s Director of Music, and John Challenger, Assistant Director of Music. The evening will be compered by The Very Revd Nicholas Papadopulos, Dean of Salisbury.
