Be A Chorister for a Day Back at Salisbury Cathedral

Be a Chorister for a Day on Saturday, 3 October, invites boys and girls in Years 2 to 4 to sing alongside the current Salisbury Cathedral choristers.

Children are invited to join this enjoyable, informal event, where parents and children can discover what it is like to be part of a historic musical tradition and become choristers.

David Halls, Director of Music at Salisbury Cathedral, said: “This event is a great way to inspire the next generation of choristers. Joining a cathedral choir opens a lot of opportunities for young people. This day is to help children and families discover the benefits of being a chorister and see if it is something they would like to pursue. All you need is a sense of curiosity and a love of singing.”

The free event includes a singing workshop led by Mr Halls, where children will rehearse and record a festive "singing Christmas card" alongside current choristers in the Cathedral. The recording will be shared with parents later in the year.

After the workshop, children will enjoy playtime in the Salisbury Cathedral School playground, while parents and guardians can learn about scholarship options and what it means to have a chorister in the family. The Cathedral School will run an open day earlier that morning.

The day will conclude with participants joining the Cathedral choristers for a special Evensong service.

In addition to Be a Chorister for a Day, there are extra opportunities to prepare before the voice trials. A Voice Trial Workshop on Saturday 12th December 2026 will help you understand what the voice trial entails and what to expect. Informal pre-auditions are also on offer, which can help keep nerves at bay before the important Voice Trial Day in January.
