Wiltshire Council is preparing to begin its annual process of ensuring the county’s electoral register is accurate and up to date, helping to make sure residents don’t lose their chance to vote on decisions that affect them.
The Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) has a legal duty to carry out the canvass each year to ensure the electoral register is as complete and accurate as possible. The process will begin in July and will run through to November.
From 21 July, households will begin to receive communications as part of the canvass process, with emails issued later in August and September where email addresses are held.
Each household in Wiltshire will receive at least one form of canvass communication, which may be via email, letter or form, asking residents to confirm who lives at the address and who is eligible to register to vote.
Not all households will be contacted at the same time, and the communication received will clearly explain whether a response is required.
The quickest and easiest way for people to confirm their details, once contacted, is by using the secure online system at www.householdresponse.com/wiltshire, using the security codes provided.
Only one response per household is required, even if more than one person receives an email.
The council encourages all residents to respond to the annual canvass electronically if they can, as it’s more convenient for residents and saves the council money and time.
Lucy Townsend, Wiltshire Electoral Registration Officer, said: “The annual canvass is our way of making sure the information on the electoral register for every address is accurate and up to date.
“Please keep an eye out for communications from us over the coming weeks and follow the instructions provided. People have a legal obligation to confirm their details, and when they receive an email or form from us it’s a simple process to complete. By responding promptly, you can help ensure you remain registered and able to vote in future elections.
“We would encourage residents to respond electronically if they can, as it is quick and convenient, with 89.4% of people responding online last year.
“Thank you to everyone for your support with this.”
As part of the process, Wiltshire Council will never ask people for their bank details, and official canvass emails will be sent from this email address: wiltshire.electoral.services@notifications.service.gov.uk.
