Traffic issues continue due to Devizes Road closusure

Lorrys and other large vehicles are still arriving at the road closure on Devizes Road and attempting to use small side roads this morning.

The issues continue into the second day of the closure due to emergency gas works on the A360.

The road was closed overnight into Tuesday morning (26th March) due to a gas leak being detected on the road between Clifton Road and Gas Lane.

SGN has said, "Our engineers are currently attending a gas escape on Devizes Road in Salisbury, where gas readings have been found in two properties on either side of the road. The gas readings are at a safe level for residents to remain in their homes and are being closely monitored by our team, who will remain on site and will be working through the night to carry out repairs.

"For everyone’s safety, we temporarily closed Devizes Road in the early hours of Tuesday morning due to the road being too narrow to safely provide access past our works under two-way lights.

"We're making good progress and hope to complete our work by this weekend."

However, local people have complained about poor signage warning of the closure, which leads to vehicles, including lorries, using small side roads, including Coldharbour Lane and Meadow Road, where vehicles are becoming trapped.

Local resident Richard Turley told Salisbury Radio, "Artic lorries are trying to get down Meadow Road and getting stuck.

"I was lucky enough to be running on my way past. I stopped traffic and helped him reverse all the way back down to Ashley Road.

"It definitely would make sense to have a sign on Ashley Road telling lorry drivers to continue down the road and not use Meadow Road."

Wiltshire Council have warned people to avoid the area, but there have been big queues around the area with Salisbury coming to a virtual standstill yesterday evening at rush hour.
