A water show in a mobile planetarium, film screenings and craft activities are part of Salisbury Cathedral’s family-friendly programme this summer.
Following the success of the Planetarium Discovery Day last autumn, the inflatable six-metre Mobile Planetarium will return to Salisbury Cathedral for Explorer Dome: The Water Show LIVE!, featuring a presenter-led science show suitable for families and children aged five and above. The show will run three times on Wednesday, 6th August, and be a celebration of the water cycle in a state-of-the-art dome experience.
On Wednesday, 20th August, there will be showings of animated films with a water theme in a cosy TV den in the Trinity Chapel. The films will include Lost and Found, a 2008 short film that explores friendship and loneliness when a young boy finds a penguin on his doorstep. Each viewer will receive an individual pair of headphones, allowing them to enjoy these animated films uninterrupted in the relaxed and atmospheric setting of the Cathedral.
Tickets for both events are available at www.salisburycathedral.org.uk and are required, along with a valid admission ticket. Residents in SP1-SP5 have free access to the Cathedral with proof of residence throughout the year.
Throughout the summer, families can participate in the Wonderful Water: Children’s Summer Trail as they explore the Cathedral, discovering the various connections to water that flow through the sacred space.
For families wanting to explore outdoors, there is a gentle walk that can take you from the Cathedral and across the Harnham Water Meadows, to experience the natural space that inspired Joy Hillyer’s painting in the current art exhibition ‘Living Water’.
Every Wednesday, there will be craft activities available from 9.30 am till 3 pm, included with admission, where you can create river bugs and water lilies, decorate your own swimming bag, experiment with paints to explore the flow of water, make your own fishing game, as well as paper craft a boat or fish using origami techniques. More information on each craft is available on the website.
Rounding the summer off, Adventure Cinema returns to Salisbury Cathedral for three nights of films, including Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone on Tuesday 26 August, and Wicked on Wednesday 27 August. Tickets for these events are available through the Adventure Cinema website.
