Salisbury Playhouse has been awarded £3 million to support a major transformation of the venue.
The funding has been provided by Arts Council England as part of its Arts Everywhere Fund.
The theatre, which has been at the heart of the community for 50 years, requires significant repairs and upgrades to remain fully operational.
Planned improvements include better accessibility, with new toilets, lifts and a Changing Places facility.
Key infrastructure such as the roof, electrical systems and air handling equipment will also be upgraded.
Environmental improvements including solar panels, LED lighting and a heat pump are planned to reduce energy use and costs.
Wiltshire Creative, which runs the Playhouse, says the investment will help protect and modernise the venue for future generations.
The theatre welcomes more than 100,000 visitors each year and hosts nearly 300 performances.
Local leaders have welcomed the funding, describing it as a major boost for Salisbury’s cultural and economic life.
Full redevelopment plans are expected to be revealed later this summer.
