Attorney General Richard Hermer KC has decided to refer the sentences of three boys convicted of raping two girls in Fordingbridge to the Court of Appeal.
The court will now decide whether the sentences were unduly lenient and whether they should be increased.
The decision follows significant public concern about the case.
Mr Hermer said the girls had shown “immense bravery” in coming forward and said the victims and their families were informed before the decision was announced more widely.
The three boys were previously given youth rehabilitation orders after being convicted at Southampton Crown Court.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer says two girls at the centre of the Fordingbridge rape cases have shown “extraordinary bravery”.
