A parcel of land near Castle Hill Country Park in Salisbury has been officially protected as an Asset of Community Value.
Wiltshire Council approved the nomination from the Friends of Hilltop Way group, after concerns the site could be developed.
The status means community groups would get time to prepare a bid if the land is sold again.
