Over 1300 runners competed in the annual Salisbury Schools Mini Marathon races on the playing fields of the schools at Laverstock on Saturday (17th May).

The sun shone down as pupils from schools in Salisbury and the local area competed against each other in the races that loop up and around Laverstock Downs after starting behind Wyvern St Edmund's secondary school.

The adult race first showed them how it is done. It set off at 9:15 a.m. in glorious sunshine with a collection of fancy dress runners, including a dinosaur, Mario and Luigi, and a few birds of different varieties.

Then came the younger runners, with four races for different age groups split into boys' and girls' races: Year 3/4 Girls, Year 3/4 Boys, Year 5/6 Girls, and finally Year 5/6 Boys.

Impressive running was on display, with some very quick times set on the course. Support was provided by the Sarum Sisters running group, and volunteer pupils from Wyvern St Edmund's helped alongside other volunteers around the course.

There were medals for all, sheilds for team prizes in each age group and trophies for the individual winner in each race too.

The event is organised by a committee made up of staff from local schools, this year headed up by Philippa Carter who is head teacher at Winterbourne Earls Primary School.

Green Trees Primary School's headteacher, Alan Geary, provided race updates, while Pat Sissons from Salisbury Radio played the music and helped keep those in attendance up to date with what was going on.
