Wiltshire Creative’s much-loved youth theatre Stage 65 returned to the Salisbury Playhouse main stage to perform The Jungle Book by Sonali Bhattacharyya last night, with performances through to Saturday.
The production was a true celebration of young people and a testament to the power of youth theatre, with Stage 65 Youth Theatre celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.
Young people were the stars both on and off stage, with the 110-strong cast joined by 12 young technicians working in stage management, lighting, sound and costume.
Four young people have also worked throughout the year to collate and compose a Stage 65 Anniversary Exhibition, now on display at Salisbury Playhouse throughout the summer.
The Wiltshire Creative team supported the young people. Over half of the creative team and the entire design team were current staff members, with sets and costumes produced on-site at Salisbury Playhouse, supporting local talent of all ages.
Stage 65 Youth Theatre Leader and Director of The Jungle Book, Clare Threadgold, said: “As I reflect on this production, what stands out most is the extraordinary group of young people who have brought it to life.
"Every rehearsal, every late night, every last-minute adjustment — they’ve handled it all with a smile, creativity and just a touch of sassiness. Youth Theatre reminds me, time and again, of the power of storytelling and the magic that happens when passionate people come together to create.”
Threadgold continued: “This production was a chance to celebrate Stage 65’s history and the impact the group has had on the local community, as well as a chance to look forward to all that is to come.
"For over six decades, Stage 65 Youth Theatre has been a vital and inspiring space for thousands of young people, allowing young people aged 6 – 21 to find their voice, confidence, creativity, lifelong friendships, and often careers in the arts industry. Wiltshire Creative is proud to support this development and provide world-class arts experiences for the region.”
