Becca Maule, a 16-year-old singer-songwriter from Salisbury, is using her music to get the voices of young people heard.
A Level 3 Music Performance student at Wiltshire College, Becca has been singing for as long as she can remember.
“Ever since I was a toddler I have been desperate to be a singer. I started to write songs on my ukulele and then I moved onto the guitar.”
Her most recent single, ‘Teenage Things’, was professionally recorded when Becca won a competition hosted by Tunnel Rat Recording Studios.
The single tackles the teenage mental health crisis, which Becca believes is dismissed by adults and professionals as ‘teenage hormones’.
Speaking to Love Salisbury, Becca said: “I wrote the song because a lot of adults and professionals dismiss teenage mental health as hormones, saying ‘everyone goes through it', but actually there is a proper crisis going on, and people are really struggling.
“It’s a really common thing for people my age to have these experiences because the mental health services are so stretched that no one is really getting the help they need.”
When asked what inspired her Becca answered: “Music is a good way to portray a message that people will actually listen to. The song is upbeat which makes you want to listen, but the lyrics spread the message further.
“The reception has been really good and people have understood what I am saying,” added Becca.
