Dorking knock Salisbury out of FA Cup

Salisbury are out of this season's FA Cup after a 4-2 defeat away at Dorking Wanderers on Tuesday evening.

Two goals in each half from Dorking saw them past a Salisbury side that played well, and it was a game not without controversy.

Goals from Prior (13), Rutherford (44,79) and Muit (48) were enough to see them past Brian Dutton's side, with the Whites' goals coming from Higgs (47) and Coppin (84).

Salisbury thought they were ahead in the first two minutes, when Noah Coppin stormed into the box on the right-hand side and his drive flew beyond Noah Phillips in the Dorking goal. It rebounded off the stanchion support at the back of the goal and back out. The officials missed that it had crossed the line, and play continued.

It was Dorking who took the lead from the penalty spot after 13 minutes. A long throw was launched into the box by Josh Taylor, and it hit the hand of Harry Revill, and the referee Ben McDonald pointed to the spot. Jason Prior stepped up and buried the ball beyond Will Buse into the bottom left-hand corner.

Dorking doubled their lead just before half-time, when Alfie Rutherford lobbed over Buse after racing on to a loose ball and the home side led by two goals to nil at the interval.

Salisbury started the second half brightly and got themselves a deserved goal within two minutes of the restart. Tommy-Lee Higgs riffling home from the edge of the box in the 47th minute.

It only took around a minute for Dorking to reestablish their two-goal advantage when Jimmy Muitt drove into the edge of the box and fired beyond Buse to make it 3-1.

Alfie Rutherford put the game beyond Salisbury in the 79th minute when he grabbed his second of the game and Dorking's fourth, firing low beyond Buse.

There was still time for one more goal, though, and it came the way of Noah Coppin, who fired high into the roof of the net in the 84th minute.

Dorking kept Salisbury pretty much at arm's length for the remainder of the game and progressed to the next round of the cup to face Aldershot Town.

Salisbury return to league action on Saturday, still looking for their first win of the league campaign, as they host third-placed Torquay United at the Ray Mac. Tickets can be purchased from the club website - https://www.salisburyfc.co.uk/tickets/
