Lib Dems sweep to victory in local by-elections

Salisbury City Council and Wiltshire County Council by-elections were held yesterday, both being won by Liberal Democrat candidates.

The by-elections were triggered following the death of Conservative councillor Mary Webb.

She had represented the St Pauls ward on Salisbury City Council and Wiltshire County Council.

Two Liberal Democrat candidates swept to commanding victories in yesterday's vote.

Sam Charleston, who is already a City Councillor, now becomes a Wiltshire Councillor, having received 64.8% of the votes cast.

Lynne Blackwood joins Salisbury City Council, having received 59.9% of the vote.

Speaking about the result, Sam Charleston said: "I'm humbled by the overwhelming support people in my home ward have shown to Lynne and me. We will endeavour to work hard on behalf of St Paul's and all its residents".

"The result last night shows once again that Liberal Democrats in Salisbury are the only challengers to the Conservatives locally and nationally.”

Labour - 237 (18.5%)

Conservative - 213 (16.6%)

Salisbury City Council

Liberal Democrats - 760 (59.9%)

Labour - 279 (22%)

Conservative - 229 (18%)
