A programme of wildlife-focused events will launch across Salisbury following funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, helping local people connect with nature on their doorstep.

Wildlife and Wellbeing, a Salisbury-based community interest company, has secured funding to deliver the Wild Salisbury project between 2026 and 2027.

The initiative will offer a wide range of accessible, low-cost events in green spaces close to the city centre, encouraging residents to discover and engage with local wildlife.

Planned activities include bat nights, family nature workshops, fungi and birdsong events and a summer solstice celebration. The programme aims to highlight the richness of Salisbury’s natural environment while supporting participants’ health and wellbeing.

Research from Natural England (2025) shows that while most people recognise the positive impact of nature on happiness, only around half feel strongly connected to it. Spending time outdoors is proven to reduce stress and support mental health, making initiatives like Wild Salisbury increasingly important.

Polly Whyte, Project Lead at Wildlife and Wellbeing, said, “Salisbury has some incredible green spaces, but much of the wildlife around us goes unnoticed. Wild Salisbury is about helping people slow down, look closer and build a meaningful connection with the natural world.

"We want to thank National Lottery players for their support - this funding has allowed us to subsidise events so they are affordable and open to everyone. Whether your interest is bats, wildflowers, fungi, or simply spending more time outdoors, there will be something for you.”

The group have some upcoming events:

  • Bat Night – Saturday 20 June, Avon Valley Nature Reserve

  • Summer Solstice Sunset Celebration - Sunday 21 June, Castle Hill Country Park
