Ford Road Bridge will be closed from Monday (29th July) for repair works.
The bridge is an essential link for the shortest route between Ford and the Winterbournes and the London road and A338. The closure will mean those living on either side of the village having a long diversion to get around the closure.
The works will take 15 days.
It’s the second time in almost a year that such works have had to take place. The bridge’s concrete parapet was struck in August last year with drivers suffering 15 days of a closure. The bridge was then struck again by a school bus driving in icy conditions on 8th January.
The bridge has been inspected and temporary warning signs and barriers erected around the damaged area.
To complete the necessary repairs, works will include removing debris from the watercourse, erecting a temporary scaffold, and casting new concrete sections.
The parapet will be rebuilt ‘like for like’ and upon completion the site will be cleared and tidied before the road reopens.
Laverstock and Ford Parish Council claim, “To all intents and purposes, the appearance of the bridge will remain unaltered. These activities will require a 15-day road closure to all traffic over the bridge.
“It is Wiltshire Council’s intention to start these works on 29th July to coincide with the school holidays and minimise disruption to the highway network.”
