Residents across Salisbury are being encouraged to support plans for a replacement Wyndham Road footbridge following a major breakthrough in discussions with National Highways.
National Highways had previously proposed removing the existing bridge over the A36 without replacing it, citing concerns over the bridge’s condition, height and the high cost of repairs.
However, following sustained community campaigning and constructive discussions involving local residents, community representatives, schools and accessibility groups, a proposal has now been developed to replace the bridge on a “like-for-like” basis.
The proposal is being welcomed as extremely positive news for Salisbury residents and for the many people who rely on the bridge each day to cross the A36 safely.
Importantly, however, the replacement bridge is not yet guaranteed.
Because of space limitations at the Wyndham Road site, it is not possible to construct a new bridge that fully complies with current accessibility standards without major changes to the surrounding area. National Highways are therefore asking local residents whether they support the proposed design before making a final decision.
Community leaders are now urging as many people as possible to complete the consultation survey and demonstrate support for retaining this important crossing.
The proposed replacement bridge would be similar in size and gradient to the existing structure, while incorporating improved safety features, including taller railings and increased road clearance.
Representatives from local schools, nursery groups and Disability Interest Group Salisbury (DIGS) have been involved in discussions with National Highways and have supported the proposed replacement, recognising that retaining the crossing would provide a safer and more practical option than the alternative routes many residents would otherwise need to use.
If approved, demolition and reconstruction work is expected to take place in 2028 as part of a wider programme that also includes the replacement of the Victoria Road footbridge.
National Highways will also be bringing their community engagement vehicle — “The Chatty Van” — to Salisbury to allow residents to ask questions and discuss the proposals directly with project representatives.
