Mr. Corfe of Sarum: musical notes and anecdotes from Georgian Salisbury.

A talk by John Dover

More Information (Salisbury Radio is not responsible for external websites)

Joseph Corfe (approximately 1740-1820) was a musical son of Salisbury. He served the Cathedral as chorister and lay vicar, and was appointed organist of the Cathedral in 1792, a post he held for twelve years. He sang in concerts both locally and in London, and was also a teacher, composer, and a gentleman of the Chapel Royal.

This talk celebrates the Corfe Family Music Collection in the Cathedral Library. Enlivened with musical interludes, it will outline Joseph Corfe’s family background, introduce Joseph Corfe himself along with his family, describe his musical activities, and conclude with a word or two about some of his descendants.

Whether your interest be in music, in local history, in Salisbury Cathedral, or in any combination of these, this talk should have something to offer you.

This event is part of a weekend of events celebrating Georgian music.
