Wiltshire’s Special Constabulary: Volunteers Making a Difference

Across Wiltshire, Special Constables play a crucial role in supporting regular police officers—whether on traffic patrols, engaging with communities, or assisting at major events.

Special Constables are volunteer police officers who hold the same powers, wear the same uniforms, and use the same equipment as their full-time colleagues. What sets them apart is their commitment: they dedicate their free time on a voluntary basis, balancing their policing duties with personal, family, and work responsibilities. Wiltshire currently has 87 Special Constables, all driven by a strong desire to protect their communities and tackle crime.

On Wednesday, 24th September, the National Police Chiefs' Council Employer Supported Policing Group and the National Special Constabulary led a nationwide day of action, focusing on crimes and anti-social behaviour that directly affect businesses and business environments, such as shopping centres.

ACC Deb Smith, NPCC lead for Employer Supported Policing, said: “I’m incredibly proud of our Special Constables, who come from all walks of life across Wiltshire and give their time to support policing.

"Their dedication, skills, and commitment make a real difference to our communities every day. I encourage more businesses to support staff who want to volunteer as Specials—together, we can keep Wiltshire one of the safest places to live.”

Colin Conway, Citizens in Policing Manager at Wiltshire Police, added: “The experience and life skills our Specials bring are invaluable. They help us approach challenges in new ways and strengthen our team.

"Our latest intake of Specials is more than double the previous group, which shows the incredible commitment of people in Wiltshire and Swindon to making their communities safer.”

Wiltshire Police is currently recruiting more Special Constables, with a particular interest in individuals with specialist skills in cyber crime, digital investigations, and IT. These abilities are increasingly important in modern policing and can make a significant impact in tackling online threats and supporting complex investigations.
