Wiltshire Police responded after receiving a report of a distraction burglary in the Downton area last week (24th April)
The Salisbury Neighbourhood Policing Team would like all residents to be vigilant and ensure that any workers offering gardening work, loft insulation, or general house maintenance have a company advertisement or contact details available.
Officers say there are several things you can do to prevent distraction burglary. Always remember, "If in doubt, keep them out."
Hints and tips:
- Use your door viewer to see who’s there and if you open the door put the chain on first if available.
- Always ask for ID and check it with the company before letting somebody into your home.
- If there is a phone number of the company, check it in the phone book or online as the number on their identity card could be fake. Close the door while you do this before letting anyone in.
- Genuine callers won’t mind checks. If you feel at all unsure, schedule a time for the caller to come back when a friend or relative is there.
- For pre-planned appointments with companies, a password scheme can be set up - ask them to confirm the chosen password before engaging in any conversation.
