As England and Wales endure a season of scorching heatwaves, The Salvation Army in Salisbury is taking a moment to salute the unsung heroes of the community: its volunteers.
Their efforts ensure the community's most vulnerable members continue to receive support, even when the weather poses significant challenges. Despite the challenging conditions, the doors of the Salt Lane community centre have remained open, providing a vital sanctuary and valuable service to those in need.
Captain Martin Davison, leader of The Salvation Army in Salisbury, has praised the unwavering commitment of volunteers who have worked tirelessly during this testing period. Capt. Martin said, “We need to say a big thank you to the many people both here at The Salvation Army and partner charities for serving our community so well. It’s been quite testing during this hot spell to stay open, but in most cases, it’s been possible because of these kind people.
“We have learned that the needs of the community do not cease during extreme weather; in fact, they often increase. People come to us for many reasons, but loneliness is often one of the hidden needs that community groups can help with. So, when appropriate, we try to stay open as people like a routine and finding doors shut can be tough to handle.”
Whilst many of us are enjoying the sunny weather, The Salvation Army is offering a space for people to come into and stay cool and hydrated, enjoying an indoor sanctuary plus a sympathetic listening ear if they wish. Capt. Martin added, “For us, it's about providing a friendly and welcoming space protecting all vulnerable people that live within our community.”
The Salvation Army provides sleeping bags, toiletries, and fresh clothing for people who are homeless from its shop and community hub, and welcomes individuals finding life tough, fostering social inclusion. A Friendship Circle group meets on Mondays to combat loneliness, while the Parent and Toddler Group supports families with young children. The Salvation Army is working in partnership with other churches, charities and groups in the community, such as the Salisbury Foodbank, Alabare and Citizens Advice Service, in reducing duplication, and volunteers may work for more than one charity, church or good cause.
