Salisbury Cathedral has announced the appointment, by the Bishop of Salisbury, of The Revd Neil Traynor as its new Canon Treasurer, a role previously held in Salisbury by the newly appointed Archbishop of Canterbury, Dame Sarah Mullally.
The Revd Neil Traynor will be installed as Canon Treasurer at Evensong on 27th April at Salisbury Cathedral, by the Bishop of Salisbury, The Right Revd Stephen Lake.
Neil joins Salisbury Cathedral from the Holland Park Benefice in London, where he has been Associate Vicar of St John the Baptist, Holland Road. It is the fastest-growing church in the Kensington area, with a reputation for championing music and a flourishing arts programme.
Neil was ordained at Wakefield Cathedral, where he held a number of positions before moving to the Parish of Witney in the Diocese of Oxford and then to the Diocese of London.
The office of Canon Treasurer exists in many cathedrals and traditionally involves responsibility for maintaining the building and preserving its ‘treasures’. In recent years, the role at Salisbury has expanded to encompass sustainability. Neil will be one of three residentiary canons at the Cathedral, each responsible for different aspects of Cathedral life.
The Revd Neil Traynor said, “I am delighted and excited to be joining Salisbury Cathedral as Canon Treasurer. I very much look forward to working with the Dean and my clergy colleagues and the wider team, particularly Clerk of Works, Gary Price, and everyone in the Works Department.
"Salisbury is a very special place, not just for local residents but for people around the world, and being part of those conserving and developing the Cathedral for future generations is a huge privilege. My daughter, Harriet, and I are looking forward to becoming part of the wonderful community.”
The Very Revd Nicholas Papadopulos, Dean of Salisbury, said, “The Treasurer has a pivotal role in the Cathedral’s life. Neil will oversee our care of our unique built heritage. He will add to our experience of it through the thoughtful introduction of artworks.
"He will lead our determined efforts to reduce our carbon consumption. And – most importantly – he will be a colleague in prayer and worship in this holy place. Neil is an entrepreneurial priest who has had a remarkable ministry in London. He is an excellent addition to the team, and we look forward to welcoming him and Harriet.”
