During Evensong on Tuesday, 13th January, The Revd Canon Dr Kenneth Padley was installed as the new Canon Chancellor at Salisbury Cathedral by the Bishop of Salisbury, The Rt Revd. Stephen Lake.
Canon Kenneth will be moving from his current role of Canon Treasurer at the Cathedral, which he has held since 2022.
The office of Canon Chancellor exists in many English cathedrals and traditionally involves responsibility for growing the theological, learning and outreach aspects of cathedral life, working with a broad range of communities inside and outside the cathedral.
Prior to the service, the Chancellor Designate took the Oath of Allegiance to The King and of Obedience to the Bishop of Salisbury. He also made and signs the declaration of Assent and the declaration to observe the Cathedral Statutes, the rules which govern the operation of a cathedral.
The Revd. Dr Kenneth Padley, Canon Chancellor, said, “It has been a huge privilege to have served for the last three and a half years as Canon Treasurer, supporting our award-winning craftspeople in their care and development of the Cathedral and Close, as we seek to welcome more worshippers and visitors.
"I am excited to begin a new phase of ministry as Canon Chancellor, working with our amazing visitor and volunteer teams and to discern fresh opportunities for faith exploration among all ages at the Cathedral.”
The Very Revd. Nicholas Papadopulos, Dean of Salisbury, said, “Kenneth has already established himself as a valued colleague, and in his new role as Chancellor of Salisbury Cathedral he will draw upon his theological acumen and gift for personal engagement to reimagine our vocation to be a place where the faith is nurtured, inspired, and discovered.”
