Salisbury resident issued with a fixed penalty notice for fly-tipped sofa

A resident from The Friary in Salisbury has been issued with a fixed penalty notice for fly-tipping a sofa in a communal area.

The resident, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was issued with the notice by Wiltshire Council Enforcement Officers after the dumped sofa was reported to them.

Officers interviewed the resident under caution about the offence and the resident made a full admission when presented with the evidence against them. They were then issued with the fixed penalty notice, which totalled £400.

Cllr Dr Mark McClelland, Cabinet Member for Transport and Waste, said, “As this case highlights, we take all reports of fly-tipping seriously and will fully investigate them. Where we can find sufficient evidence, we will issue fixed penalty notices or, in more serious cases, prosecute the perpetrators.

“We will not tolerate fly-tipping in Wiltshire, and our dedicated Environmental Enforcement team will continue to do all they can to track down and take action against fly-tippers.”

Residents can report fly-tipping and unauthorised waste carriers using the MyWilts app, by visiting the website, or by calling 0300 4560100.

Wiltshire Council advises that anyone who allows people to take away their waste should check the following:

References: are they reputable and qualified to do the work?Waste Carrier Licence: ask to see it, is it in date? Record the card number.Payments: ask for a detailed receipt on completion of work.Photograph: take pictures of the vehicle and registration used to remove the waste.
