PCC responds to figures around police-perpetrated violence towards women and girls

Wiltshire PCC Philip Wilkinson has responded following the publication of the Tackling VAWG (Violence Against Women and Girls) – Police performance and insights report released by the National Police Chiefs’ Council today.

Further to this publication, Wiltshire Police revealed it had undertaken or overseen five police perpetrated violence against women and girls complaint and misconduct allegation cases between 1st October 2021 and 31st March 2022.

Wiltshire Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Wilkinson said: “Restoring public trust and confidence in policing is crucial and being transparent in how policing polices itself is a step forward.

“No area of police remains untainted by these figures and it is shocking that is has taken such appalling acts of depravity by serving police officers to bring this to the fore. Policing needs this scrutiny, and accountability, to the public.

“Wiltshire Police is determined to restore the public’s trust and confidence and work has started on that journey in terms of training, standards and leadership, however, the Chief Constable and I firmly recognise that actions speak louder than words.

“We are looking deeper within our own organisations and we are asking our colleagues to challenge behaviours and report. Wiltshire Police has also been transparent in its misconduct process, ensuring swift action is taken against those who exhibit substandard behaviours and ensuring its vetting is meeting best practice

“Chief Constable Roper has my full support in rooting out those in Wiltshire Police who seek to abuse their position of trust. It will not be tolerated.”
