Wiltshire Police has been engaging with motorcyclists across the county over the past two weeks as part of Operation Apex, a proactive initiative aimed at promoting safer riding ahead of the busy summer period.
The operation saw officers carry out 47 motorcycle stops, providing riders with advice, guidance, and, where necessary, enforcement action. While the focus remained on education, a small number of offences were identified and appropriately dealt with.
However, the initiative was as much about building relationships as it was about enforcement. Officers and riders shared positive conversations at the roadside, ranging from safety advice to the light-hearted debate over whose bike was best, highlighting the strong and supportive community among motorcyclists in Wiltshire.
Neil Duffin, Roads Policing Unit Inspector for Wiltshire Police, said, "With more motorcyclists taking to Wiltshire’s roads over the coming weeks, we’re asking all road users to play their part in keeping everyone safe.
"Drivers should remain alert for motorcycles, leave plenty of space when following, and take extra care at junctions, when turning right, and on roundabouts, which are areas that continue to feature in a number of collisions on our roads. It’s been great to speak to so many riders over the past two weeks, share knowledge and encourage everyone to consider their safety options."
With warmer weather approaching and more riders expected on the roads, Wiltshire Police is encouraging motorcyclists to take advantage of the BikeSafe scheme. The national police-led initiative is designed to improve riding skills, enhance hazard awareness and ultimately reduce the risk of collisions.
BikeSafe workshops combine observed rides with classroom-based input, offering practical tips and expert advice to help riders stay safe. You can find out more or book a workshop here: Wiltshire Police - BikeSafe
Wiltshire Police would like to thank all riders who engaged positively during the operation and remind everyone to ride safely, remain alert and look out for one another on the roads this summer.
