Multi-agency emergency preparedness exercise tests local emergency services

A multi-agency emergency preparedness exercise, which took place in Swindon on Sunday evening (6th July) has been completed successfully.

This exercise, which involved Wiltshire Police, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, and the South Western Ambulance Service Trust, was designed to simulate a coordinated response to a major incident, ensuring that emergency teams and shopping centre operators are fully prepared for any eventuality.

Throughout the evening, emergency personnel tested response protocols, coordinated communication strategies, and evaluated their ability to work seamlessly in a high-pressure environment.

This exercise is part of our ongoing commitment to public safety and security, allowing responders to refine procedures that protect residents, visitors, and businesses across the region.

Superintendent Steve Cox said, “Exercises like this are crucial in testing our ability to respond effectively and collaboratively.

“Our priority is ensuring that emergency services and local businesses work together to strengthen public safety.

“We appreciate the cooperation and patience of the community and businesses during this training event and we would like to thank the management and staff of McArthur Glen Designer Outlet Village for their support in facilitating this training exercise."

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Group Manager, James Plumley said: “This exercise has been a fantastic learning opportunity for our firefighters and officers. It is vital that we collaborate with our partners and use training exercises like this to prepare for a variety of risks. I’d like to thank the local community and businesses for their support and cooperation last night.”

Lewis Connell, Emergency Preparedness, Resilience, and Response Officer, at the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, said: “In the event of a major incident, we have clear processes and plans in place to help protect and care for our communities.

“Being able to test and exercise our response plans allows us to increase our preparedness for any major incident. It also provides an excellent opportunity to work alongside other emergency services and partner organisations.”
