Drawings of Salisbury’s Charter Market on display

An art exhibition documenting a year in the life of Salisbury’s historic Charter Market is coming to Fisherton Mill on Saturday 21st August 2021.

‘A Gap in the Market’ is a drawing project by Nick Andrew exploring the activity, movement and transitory nature of Salisbury market and other events in the heart of the city.

The mixed-media drawings, produced since September 2020, are being exhibited at Fisherton Mill, Salisbury, from Saturday 21st August until Saturday 25th September. Admission is free and the exhibition will be open 10am-5pm Monday-Friday, and 9.30am-5.30pm on Saturdays.

Nick’s usual studio practice is as a landscape painter, but he also undertakes plein air drawing projects in both rural and urban environments.

As a personal celebration of 40 years since his fine art degree show, in which he exhibited large scale paintings inspired by the shapes, forms and colours of Salisbury market, he decided to undertake this project exploring the same subject.

In his drawings, Nick also makes written notations about experiences such as conversations with stallholders and shoppers, sounds, smells and the feel of the weather.

Meet the artist
There is also the chance to meet Nick as he draws in the Market Square each Tuesday and Saturday morning during the exhibition. He will also be back at the Gallery during those afternoons between 1pm and 4pm.

Proceeds of the sale of drawings made on these days will be donated to the Salisbury Hospital Stars Appeal.
