Wiltshire Council is launching a consultation on proposed changes to non-statutory post-16 transport for young people with SEND who have an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and is encouraging everyone to have their say.
The consultation, from 4 March to 15 April, invites young people, parents, carers, schools and colleges to share their views, and invites feedback on a range of options that aim to keep transport sustainable, while also supporting young people to develop travel confidence and independence in preparation for adult life . The feedback will help to shape the final proposals.
A webinar is also planned on Tuesday, 17 March, from 6pm-7pm, where people can hear more on the proposals and ask questions.
The council currently provides several types of travel support for young people aged 16-25 who have SEND and an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Rising costs and increasing demand mean the council must explore alternative, sustainable approaches that continue to support access to education and encourage independence, while helping to deliver a balanced budget.
Post-16 transport is non-statutory and any current Year 11 who will join Year 12 post-16 will be subject to any proposed revised policy. Any young person already in Year 12 and staying on the same course for Year 13 will continue with their current transport arrangements until that course ends, but their transport provider could be subject to change.
Options may include:
- A bus pass for public transport
- A mileage allowance for parents or carers who drive their young person
