Community project transforms Exeter Street underpass with colourful mural

A group of young people have worked alongside a local artist to brighten up the underpass near Exeter Street.

With the support of the Underpasses Working Group in collaboration with Salisbury City Council and Wiltshire County Council, a group of local young people from Splash Wiltshire, supported by local artist Fred Fieber, have created a colourful mural in the Exeter Street underpass.

The 2-day project was the second of its kind completed in Salisbury by Splash-Wiltshire. Passers-by and local residents were very impressed not only by the young people’s excellent work but also by how the mural lightened and brightened the underpass, making it feel safer.

Councillor Sven Hocking and Councillor Lynne Blackwood lent helping hands amidst many laughs and paint-daubed moments with the young people present.

Splash has supported Wiltshire’s young people for nearly 35 years and forms part of Youth Action Wiltshire, the ‘Youth Arm’ of Wiltshire charity Community First (registered charity number 288117).

The Splash project was supported by Salisbury Area Board and Salisbury City Council; however, the team are also reaching out to local shops and suppliers for any donations of materials and resources such as paint brushes, paint trays, protective gloves, paint and dust sheets for future projects.

Splash worker Rachel said: “This was a real community project, and it would be wonderful to get local businesses involved in any way that we can.”
