On Wednesday, 14 October, BBC Radio 3 will broadcast Evensong live from Salisbury Cathedral.
The senior boy and girl choristers and 12 Lay Vicars will sing the service. The music will include Harris’ Holy is the True Light, Shephard in A, and Parry’s Lord, let me know mine end. The Cathedral’s Director of Music, David Halls, will lead the choir, with John Challenger on organ.
The BBC has broadcast Choral Evensong since 7 October 1926, when it first streamed from Westminster Abbey. This year marks a century of sung choral Evensong being relayed from Cathedrals across the country and has become the BBC’s longest-running outside broadcast and is widely acknowledged as the longest-running outside broadcast in the world.
The Dean of Salisbury, the Very Revd Nicholas Papadopulos, said:
“It is always a delight to welcome BBC Radio 3 to Salisbury and for the music and prayer of our daily worship to be shared with a wider audience. This occasion is particularly special, as the station marks a century since it began broadcasting the reflective beauty of Choral Evensong”
Everyone is welcome to attend the service, which will begin at 3 pm. The congregation is asked to be seated by 2.40pm.
