Gracie Barra Salisbury welcomed a lively group from the Downton 1st Scouts Cub Pack this week for a special introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and practical self-defence skills.
The visit formed part of the Cubs’ Challenge Awards, including the Skills Challenge and Teamwork Challenge, giving the young participants a chance to learn from qualified martial arts instructors in a safe and supportive environment.
During the session, coaches demonstrated how to defend against common situations, such as neck grabs, and taught the Cubs simple, effective movements to stay safe and create space. The children also learned how to escape from mount and side control, two key grappling positions that help develop awareness, balance, and calm thinking under pressure.
In true Gracie Barra fashion, the session wasn’t all drills; there was plenty of fun, too. The Cubs threw themselves enthusiastically into several Jiu-Jitsu-based games designed to build teamwork, coordination, and confidence while reinforcing the techniques they had learned.
Leaders from both Gracie Barra Salisbury and the Downton Cub Pack praised the children for their focus, manners, and positive attitude throughout the visit. Many Cubs left the mats proudly showing off their new skills and eager to return for more.
Gracie Barra Salisbury instructor Callum Swift commented, “We love welcoming groups such as the Scouts onto our mats to provide a safe introduction to self-defence. We offer these sessions for free to any local groups, and for all ages.”
The collaboration marks another successful community initiative for Gracie Barra Salisbury, continuing its mission to help young people develop discipline, resilience, and self-confidence through martial arts.
